Hunt Auctions

Situation

Hunt Auctions has established itself as one of the finest vintage sports memorabilia auctions across the United States. For more than 25 years, the business has taken pride in offering authentic sports collectibles, paired with high quality service. Since the Hunt family established the firm more than a quarter century ago, Hunt Auctions has secured major partnerships with various sports entities such as the Major League Baseball All-Star Fan Fest since 2005, NFL Auctions at the Super Bowl since 2009 and even the NFL and MLB Hall of Fame organizations. Hunt Auctions has also represented sports legends like Ted Williams, Johnny Unitas and Roberto Clemente.

Having been a client since 2015, Hunt Auctions utilized the services of Jenna Communications when the Clemente family decided they were ready to auction off Roberto Clemente’s personal collection. The auction was set to take place at the 2017 MLB All-Star Fan Fest in Miami. Jenna Communications was tasked with building awareness for and promoting what would become the most successful auction in company history.

Strategy

We set out to depict the upcoming auction for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game as one of the most intriguing and unique opportunities for sports memorabilia collectors due to Clemente’s unique story and fame. Roberto Clemente made history as a Latin American baseball player playing in a Caucasian dominated league. He became the first Latin American and Caribbean player to help win a World Series as a starting position player (1960), to receive an NL MVP Award (1966), and to receive a World Series MVP Award (1971). Clemente was one of the most decorated MLB athletes in history, however a tragic plane crash shocked the world and led to his passing at the young age of 38.

After 45 years, the Clemente family was ready to share Roberto’s personal collection with the world. Jenna Communications launched a promotional campaign for the auction that sought to highlight the value of the items in the collection and the history behind them. Over 300 items were set to be auctioned with items including several of Clemente’s Gold Glove Awards, his NL MVP Award from 1966, the last hat Clemente ever wore in game, his 1971 World Series Ring, his 1964 National League Championship Silver Bat Award and so much more. Jenna Communications pitched the event to local and national news outlets and as a result of our persistence and dedication, over 200 media outlets published articles, produced news stories, and conducted interviews with David Hunt, CEO of Hunt Auctions. Our team worked closely with Hunt to go over talking points and prepare him for every interview. We also took over social media efforts during the campaign and promoted the auction via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
