Five Things to Know as a Communications/PR Student

As I am nearing the end of my graduate school career, they are many things that I know now that I wish had I known when I was an undergrad. Here, I came up with five things that every public relation student should know.
1. Write, Write, Write and Edit Your Work – Always take any opportunity to write if you can. Regardless if it is a blog, a story, a paper, or a poem, just make sure you write. Writing is very important in communications and public relations. Most of our messages are sent to the public in writing, through print mediums. Not only will the repetition strengthen you and make you more comfortable with writing, but also it can allow you to become a better editor. No publication wants to have to edit a press release once it is sent to them.
2. Research and stay current – Always make sure to stay current in what is going on in the world. By staying current you will be aware of world issues along with the possibility of getting a closer look at your competitors or hearing a story that could pose as a potential threat to your company.
3. Connect with Others (Network!) – Networking is very important in public relations. This field is a field that is all about working with people and making connections to build enriching professional relationships. Keep in touch with your professors, mentors, academic advisors, and other college professionals; they can potentially help you in the future.
4. Build a Portfolio – Please remember to save all of your papers, writing assignments, articles and other forms of work that you have done and compile them into a binder or electronic form of archives. This can really help you stand out in an interview when it comes time to look for a job.
5. Be on Time and stay prepared for anything – In PR, many things are very time sensitive and many projects have time restraints so it is always important to meet deadlines. Most print publications have to be out to the public by a certain time or a crisis could require you to quickly write up a document in a small amount of time.
