PR Tip of the Month: How to Ace a Guest Blogging Opportunity
In our latest PR Tip of the Month, Jenna Communications president Jennifer Sherlock explains how to ace a guest blogging opportunity and reap the full benefits from it.
Tips for Guest Blogging
One of the best ways to boost your online presence is by offering to be a guest blogger on a reputable site within your field. Through guest blogging, you can display yourself as a thought leader and ultimately lead more people to engage with you and your company’s products or services. However, approaching a blogger and offering to guest blog can often be tricky because so many people are always looking for this opportunity. In this month’s PR Tip, we will give a few hints on how to set yourself apart and land that guest blogging engagement.
• Start by making connections: After you’ve decided which blog you’d like to write for, begin by connecting with the blog/blogger on as many social media channels as possible. Bloggers are much more receptive to allowing guest writers they recognize from online connections rather than those who email pitch them out of the blue.
• Think about Your Topic and Carefully Consider Keywords: The goal of guest blogging is to have an expanded audience outside your network find your content. Believe it or not, Google has a Keyword Tool that analyzes how competitive a search term is. Try to develop blog topics that have low-medium search competition, as they will have a better chance of showing up on the first page of a Google search for people to see.
• Don’t Jeopardize Your Opportunity for Being Invited Back: When you guest blog, you will often be asked to honor some requests from the blog owner. For example, be sure to set time aside to respond to comments about your guest blog. Since you are the author, you are considered the subject expert; therefore, it is your job, not the blog owner’s, to respond to comments in a timely manner. Also, make sure you set clear stipulations as to when you can post your guest blog on your own site and social media. Common courtesy is to allow the blog to stand alone on the site you guest-wrote for, and then to post on your own site after several weeks. When you post on your own site, don’t forget to credit the blog where it first appeared.
By keeping some of these items in mind, you can ace your guest blogging experience and reap the benefits of reaching an expanded, targeted audience.
