FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ARMY VETERAN AND OAKCREST GRAD TO PLAY ARENA FOOTBALL ALONGSIDE FELLOW VETERANS
–Veterans prepare for Arena Football Rivalry as part of The Philadelphia Soul’s Military Appreciation Night–
MAYS LANDING, N.J., June 11, 2013 – Specialist Kevin Fletcher, a 2009 graduate of Oakcrest High School and member of the U.S. Army’s 4th Brigade 10th Mountain Division will represent the Army Veterans team when he plays arena football in the inaugural Army Veterans vs. Navy Veterans Arena Football Game on June 22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
The game is part of the Philadelphia Soul’s and Judge VIP (Veterans in Professional) Careers’ Military Appreciation Night that will include a veterans Speed Career Networking Event exclusively for transitioning military service members, wounded warriors, veterans and military spouses from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. prior to the evening’s events.
Minority owner of the Philadelphia Soul and CEO of The Judge Group Martin E. Judge, Jr., said the mission of the hiring event is to find employment for veterans.
Afterwards, the evening will celebrate our heroes through the American pastime of football – arena style.
Fletcher played defensive end for the Oakcrest High School Falcons football team, and after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of boot camp at Ft. Benning, Ga. the soldier was stationed with the 4th Brigade 10th Mountain Division in Ft. Polk, La. By 2010, Specialist Fletcher was deployed to the desert of Afghanistan.
Occasionally, Fletcher would play a pickup game of football with the other soldiers at Forward Operating Base Altimus, an eastern Afghanistan outpost nestled 7700 ft. in a mountainous valley 50 miles south of Kabul. Their “field” was protected by 20-foot walls adorned with razor wire. The sport provided a competitive stress relief from the seriousness of combat patrols with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment to which he was attached.
Now an undergraduate student at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J., Fletcher is studying criminal justice with a concentration in forensic psychology; however, the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League and The Judge Group have afforded him the opportunity to put on the pads again, and play for the Army Veterans team.
On the Navy Veterans side of the ball, the team consists of standout football stars including United States Naval officer and former college football quarterback for the United States Naval Academy Ricky Dobbs and former Naval Academy kicker and Navy Commander Frank Schenk. Also on the roster are former Naval academy football wide receiver and Naval officer Tyree Barnes (‘09) and Andy Person (‘96), who still holds the Navy’s all-time career record in two categories: defensive sacks and tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
