PORTSMOUTH NAVY VETERAN TO PLAY ARENA FOOTBALL AT WELLS FARGO CENTER ALONGSIDE FELLOW VETERANS

Veterans’ Speed Career Networking Event Part of Philadelphia Soul Military Appreciation Night Activities

PORSTMOUTH, Va., June 11, 2013– After separating from the military, Navy veteran Joshua Sandwell finally found a career at Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding. It took 6 months for the 13-year Navy veteran to find meaningful employment in the civilian sector. He can relate to veterans struggling to assimilate into the workforce and to successfully apply their skillset to the workplace.

“We are perfectly capable of doing the job,” Sandwell said. “We just have trouble putting it into words in a resume, and an employer doesn’t know how to translate our terminology.”

Martin E. Judge Jr., minority owner of the Philadelphia Soul and CEO of The Judge Group, a global professional services firm, plans to tackle the issue of veteran unemployment and underemployment with the creation of his company’s newest division, Judge VIP Careers.

“The idea behind creating this new division is to leverage our existing core competencies in consulting, staffing and training,” Judge said. “Then, apply this success to a deserving population while also bringing outstanding talent to our clients.”

Not a businessman to operate in a small arena, Judge is assembling top employers at the Wells Fargo Center’s Caadillac Grille on June 22 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. for a veterans “Speed Career Networking Event.”  All active, guard and reserve component members and military spouses, and veterans will be able to interface with military-friendly employers with available job openings.  Career Advisors and coaches on resume writing skills and interview techniques will also donate their time to help the veterans successfully transition into new careers.

To conclude the day, the inaugural Army Veterans vs. Navy Veterans Arena Football game will commence.

Sandwell was selected to play arena football in a specially drafted unit of veterans that will face off in Philadelphia in a friendly rivalry following the June 22 Philadelphia Soul vs. Iowa Barnstormers game at the Wells Fargo Center. Amongst the esteemed members of his team will be United States naval officer and former college football quarterback for the United States Naval Academy Ricky Dobbs, and former Naval Academy kicker and Navy commander Frank Schenk.

Sandwell said, “I decided to try out for (the Army Veterans vs. Navy Veterans Arena Football Game) because it gives me another venue to showcase my talents and to represent the Navy and my semi-pro teams on a different level.”

He said he isn’t concerned with transitioning from traditional football to the arena football rules.

“We’re studying the playbooks. I have enough football IQ to pick up on it,” he added.

Sandwell and Dobbs have played together on the semi-pro football teams the Virginia Cyclones and the Virginia Crusaders.

Soul owners, including NFL quarterback and ESPN Football analyst, Ron Jaworski, will be present to cheer the veterans’ matchup alongside newly acquired defensive lineman Morkeith Brown, who is a United States Army veteran deployed for 14 months to Afghanistan in 2005.

Sandwell is excited about his arena football debut. “It will give me another opportunity to represent the Navy to the best of my ability,” he said.
