WHY:  To showcase the impact of a local deaf woman whose battle with cancer and illness didn’t stop her from being a champion in bodybuilding, or becoming a success with founding a local charity called Alexandra’s Ambition where she cares for those fighting similar ordeals. “My hope is that my story inspires someone to not only keep going; but, to believe that they can do anything in spite of their circumstances,” said Alex Dunek.

About Alex Dunek:

Alex Dunek is 27 years old, and is a deaf competitive bodybuilder. She is one of three triplets; who battled Germ Cell Sarcoma, a rare cancer that makes up 2% of childhood cancers. The cancer had spread to her stomach, tailbone and lungs. After six rounds of intensive chemotherapy, that cost her to lose her hearing, she was announced cancer-free. Because of her experience, she and her mom founded “Alexandra’s Ambition”, an organization that helps care for those affected by childhood cancer and illness.  In 2014, she graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and took the leap into bodybuilding where she became a 2x Nationally Qualified athlete. She is also the fitness writer for JerseyMan and PhillyMan Magazines where she shares stories of other inspiring athletes in the area. She is fluent in American Sign Language and lip-reading and although she grew up mostly in the hearing world, she identifies with a deaf one.
