Philadelphia Marathon Weekend 30th Anniversary Call for Design Qualifications 

Call to local artists to participate in a design competition. 

The winning design will be showcased during the 2023 Philadelphia Marathon Weekend. 

Philadelphia, PA, (July 22, 2022) – The Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy (OACCE) has partnered with the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend to hold a design competition for Philadelphia artists to create unique shirt designs for the 30th anniversary of the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend happening in November 2023. The winning design will be incorporated in the shirts and other promotional goods for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Philadelphia  Marathon, Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, and Rothman Orthopaedics 8K races during the 2023 Philadelphia Marathon Weekend. The design competition winner will receive a  $3,000 prize.

To respond to this preliminary call for design qualifications, Philadelphia-based artists may submit no more than five (5) work samples showcasing relevant design work. Please do not create custom Philadelphia Marathon Weekend shirt designs to submit for this preliminary qualification. Following the review of the submitted design qualifications, four (4) semi-finalists will be selected and invited to create one (1) unique Philadelphia Marathon Weekend 30th  Anniversary shirt design for the competition. Submit design qualifications here.

Interested artists are invited to view winning designs from the 2021 Philadelphia Marathon  Weekend shirt design competition here as well as shirt design samples from years prior here.

The deadline to submit design qualifications is Friday, August 19 by 5:00 p.m. The semi-finalists will be announced on Monday, August 29. Upon notification, semi-finalists will be provided instructions and specifications for submitting final designs for the competition.

• Monday, October 17 – Semi-Finalists Submit Final Designs

• Thursday, October 27 – Finalists Announced and Online Voting Opens for Designs • Friday, November 18-Sunday, November 20 – Competition Promoted During Philadelphia  Marathon Weekend

• Sunday, November 20 – Winning Design Announced on Final Day of Philadelphia  Marathon Weekend

The selection panel for the semi-finalists and the winning 30th-anniversary design will include sponsor representatives from AACR, Dietz & Watson, and Rothman Orthopaedics as well as representatives for the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend and the City of Philadelphia Office of  Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

Decisions of the organizers are final with respect to all matters relating to this design competition.  By participating, the designers agree to the rules and the decisions of the organizers, which shall be final and binding in all respects. Any entry deemed inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, or unsuitable (in the organizers’ sole discretion) will be disqualified.

About the Philadelphia Marathon 

The Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend, organized by the Office of the Managing Director,  welcomes over 30,000 runners, 60,000 spectators, and 3,000 volunteers each year. Race Weekend  2022 features a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, November 18, and Saturday,  November 19 Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, Rothman Institute 8K and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, November 19; and the AACR Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, November 20. Race participants pass many of Philadelphia’s famous attractions on the swift and scenic USATF-certified course, which is a Boston qualifier.
