PR Tip: Common Mistakes to Avoid with Social Media Marketing

Nearly every business is on at least one social media channel today because owners see social media as a new tool to reach an even larger customer base. However, social media can backfire for your business if you are not using it properly. Today, we will warn you about some common mistakes that businesses make during their foray into social media spaces.

1. Lack of corporate branding: Sounds obvious, but many businesses fail to incorporate their branding schemes into social media pages. Before setting up a new social media site, be sure to include company logos and color schemes that match all other marketing collateral. You want people to be able to identify your social media sites just as quickly as they would identify your company on a billboard or print ad.

2. Lack of consistency: Many companies fail on social media because they don’t have a strong commitment to constantly engage followers. When you create your page, develop a library of topics to post and plan them out on a calendar. There are plenty of social media systems like HooteSuite and Tweetdeck that can help you schedule postings for large blocks of time, making the entire process efficient.

3. Not responding to followers and fans: Remember; social media is a two-way street. Failing to respond to comments from fans is like letting the phone ring in your office. Quick, direct responses to fans will pleasantly surprise them, and it’s one of the best ways to connect with potential customers in real time and draw them to your brand.

By remembering to do these little things, you will develop a better presence on social media and ultimately gain a strong fan base.
