PR Tip of the Month: Questions to Ask Yourself before Posting on Social Media

Posting social media content: it’s something we do every day, if not more frequently. But, before you go and click that post or tweet button, you may want to think twice about what you’re putting out there so you don’t get caught in an awkward spot.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before you put out your next social media post.

• Will anyone in the community find the content useful? While you might be thoroughly entertained by the content, you have to consider whether it will be enjoyed by your followers, too.

• How likely is the content to breed discussion and foster interaction? Remember, the most effective posts are those that generate buzz on your page from followers. You never want the majority of your posts to be one-way coming out of your organization.

• Is the content produced by you or another source? Content that is internally sourced from you or your organization is always best for social media pages because it displays you as the expert. However, content from another party may be of interest to you. When posting content from another source, make sure it did not originate from a competitor. This is one of the biggest mistakes businesses make, inadvertently reposting a competitor’s content.

• After you share a piece of content, how likely are others to re-share it? Your presence on social media is all about visibility. Having your followers share your content with their followings gets your name in front of potentially thousands of new faces for free, which is why you should always aim to make your content as share-friendly as possible.

By keeping some of these questions in mind, you will write much more effective social media posts and notice a difference as you begin to fully engage your followers.
