Musician Marketing Tips

This is for those of you out there with the desire to use your marketing skills to achieve success with a musical talent. There are many different strategies within the confines of the expanding market of music that can be considered when marketing a musician.

1. Tech Hiding

This is a new epidemic that plagues the artists of the 21st century.”Tech Hiding” is when musicians rely only on the internet for exposure. They will post videos on Youtube, consistently keep up with social media and even have an online store, but in the music industry in 2014, the real money for artists is in live performances. Album sales have been on a constant decline due to online pirating and only being an internet sensation is not enough to keep you afloat.

Be active with fans. Interact with them. Host events and fundraisers. Attend shows of other artists. Take advantage of open mics. It is amazing what going up to fan can do. A simple hand shake and a two minute conversation can turn a listener into a full-fledged fan. Human interaction is key.

2. Collaborations

There are lots of different ways to expand your audience. Collaborations are crucial because not only is it a great way to network with other musicians, but it is a great way to grab new fans. When fans of another artist hear you on a song with the artist they enjoy listening to, it can trigger a subconscious acceptance of you for that particular fan because you will come across as a friend of a friend. In a competitive mind-state, as an artist, you should be aiming to sound better than the person you are collaborating with in order to grasp a hold of their fan base so that they become loyal supporters of your music.

3. Industry Sound

This is something that grinds my gears. I love the initiative of artists that take control of their own situation and go out and buy a microphone and a Macbook and recording software such as Protools. The majority of the time, these artists don’t know there way around Protools or any other recording software for that matter. They think they do, but they don’t. You can’t get by with knowing the basics in this industry and you can’t get by sounding basic in this industry.

It takes money to make money so do a little research and find a solid recording studio in your area with professionals that know what they are doing and book some time. You will learn from them, you will network with them and you will sound better. Stick to writing and recording and let the professionals do the technical stuff.

4. Visual Consistency

Consistency in every aspect of music is so important. In the realm of consistency there are so many actions that can be focused on, but the one I would like to shed light on is visual consistency. You can’t have a great song and a crappy video. The song will lose credibility. You can’t have a great video and a horribly boring logo that is on your merchandise. You can’t have a great logo on your merchandise and drop a song with the graphic art being that of a 5th grade Photoshop experiment. Visuals are what you will be judged upon before the song even starts, so they need to be up to par with industry standards.

Every type of visual you give to your viewers needs to be on the same level. Like I said before, you need to spend money to make money. Pay the $100 for a decent logo made by a graphic designer instead of having your roommate create one for free because he used Photoshop a couple times. Pay for the quality video instead of using your buddy’s old camcorder. I assure you that the reception to quality will make you much happier as an artist in the long run, as well as confident in your product.

Hope these tips helped you out a little bit. So until next time….
