FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PHILADELPHIA FIRE DEPARTMENT LIEUTENANT TO MANAGE NAVY VETERANS IN ARENA FOOTBALL GAME

Veterans prepare for Arena Football Rivalry as part of the Philadelphia Soul’s Military Appreciation Night

PHILADELPHIA, June 11, 2013 – Firefighter Lt. Richard Brown of Philadelphia Ladder 15 will serve as the operations manager for the Navy Veterans team in the upcoming Army Veterans vs. Navy Veterans Arena Football Game on June 22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The veterans game will follow the Soul’s regular season game against the Iowa Barnstormers at 6:05 p.m.

Brown said he is excited about the role he will play in the game, which is part of the Philadelphia Soul’s and Judge VIP (Veterans in Professional) Careers’ Military Appreciation Night. The event will also include a Veterans’ Speed Career Networking Event exclusively for transitioning military service members, wounded warriors, veterans and military spouses from 1:30-4:30 p.m. prior to the evening’s events.

Minority owner of the Philadelphia Soul and CEO of The Judge Group Martin E. Judge, Jr. said the mission of the hiring event is to find employment for veterans and begin a movement to tackle the high rate of unemployment for members of our Armed Forces.

Afterwards, the event will celebrate our heroes with the great American pastime of football – arena style.

The Navy Veterans are finalizing a roster that includes former U.S. Naval  Academy standouts such as U.S. Naval officer and former college quarterback Ricky Dobbs; former Naval Academy kicker and Navy commander Frank Schenk; former wide receiver and U.S. Navy Lt. Junior Grade Tyree Barnes; former defensive end Ensign Jabaree Tuani; as well as three of the 6 Person brothers that played for Navy, including record holder Andy Person.

An alumnus of Northeast Philadelphia’s Abraham Lincoln High School, Brown enlisted in the Navy upon graduation. The chief petty officer transferred from active duty status and joined the Reserves in 1988 to enable him to serve the public in a different uniform – as a Philadelphia firefighter.

Brown is humble, as most heroes are, and even after his 2005 retirement from military service he does not divulge information about the missions or injuries from his service with the United States Navy /Air National Guard during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Now a lieutenant, Brown has spent the majority of his firefighting career with Rescue 1, the Philadelphia Fire Department’s elite heavy rescue unit in Northern Liberties. This specialized force, distinguished by its black helmets, works on assignments such as tactical and river rescues. Brown utilizes his specialized military training and has often rappelled off bridges to save victims.

Although now a firefighter, Brown’s loyalty will fall with fellow sailors on June 22.
